World Keeps Spinning Right Round

I read this yesterday and I found it absolutely terrifying. I never realized how awful it would be if the world stopped spinning.

The notion has been in poetry since we learned the Earth spins. After seeing what would happen if the world stopped spinning, I think your love leaving you will probably not be that bad. It really puts things into perspective...

As the World Doesn't Turn

It's frightening to know that at any point the world could collapse into utter chaos. (After all, it's not impossible for the world to stop spinning.) However, it is very unlikely. Definitely not as likely to happen as many other bad things in life.

What I take away from this installment of Vsauce is: No matter how bad these everyday things are, my world is still turning.

We Have The Technology...

Samsung's Galaxy Gear is an exciting piece of technology! Much like the introduction of the touchscreen, this is yet another step toward the future our forefathers only dreamed of in fiction.

The Jetsons. Tex Avery's "House of Tomorrow". Star Trek. I often wonder how close are we to the advanced technology of "the future". After all, this is the future, right?

Science and technology have made incredible advances. Apparently, time travel is possible (in one direction). Hovercrafts are real. Video-chatting allows us to see people we're speaking with in real-time. Late performers have returned to the stage via hologram. Cars can self-park!

I'm admittedly excited about Galaxy Gear. However, I doubt this trend will stick.

For some reason, it feels like we aren't ready for it to be "the future" yet. Sure, we'll adopt the technological advances that preserve us and make our lives easier, but society hasn't fully embraced the futuristic age.

To my knowledge, no major car company is producing a hover car. No one is adding cybernetic upgrades to themselves. Futuristic home furnishings are regarded as mere novelty items. We have the technology; we just don't have the will to implement it. Why is that?

The distinction between the past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.
--Albert Einstein

Perhaps we have too much respect for the past to abandon it. (This would explain trends like Instagram and "vintage" decor and clothing.) Maybe we have too many issues to work out in the present to look forward to the future right now.

My theory is, along with all of the aforementioned reasons, fear keeps us from adopting serious technological advances. If we were to create this very different, wildly expensive infrastructure based on fairly new technology, the likelihood of glitches and failures would be astronomical! And the costs would be just as high. There would be no turning back, and life on Earth could get really bad really fast.

So, it might be better to ease our way into the futuristic world with a talking phone or a fancy watch than having your cyber-brain installed...

Take Me to The Future?

Time.

A comforting constant in an ever-changing world. The human life cannot last forever (yet), and, because of that, we sometimes fear the passage of time. However, when it's an hour before your shift ends, you want nothing more but for time to speed up.

I bring up the topic of time because apparently we can time travel now! I was bored online one day and wondered: Have we reached "the future" yet? How would I know? Can we travel through time?!

So I turned to Google, and lo and behold: It's a scientific consensus that, according to Einstein's theory of relativity, time travel is possible. There is a catch, though. You can only go into the future.

It's kind of like in the Adam Sandler movie, Click, where the main character fasts forward in time through some dull points of life. Imagine getting into a machine, then returning home several years in the future...

I knew I should have voted before I leaped.

Personally, I think it would be more interesting to travel backward through time. Scientists aren't saying its impossible to travel back in time, but there are other concerns:

  • If you go back in time and murder your father before you are born, then won't you cease to exist?
  • (My own question) If it is someday possible for someone to travel back in time, wouldn't we have met someone from the future already?
But think of what you could do with backward time travel! You could meet your parents when they were still considered cool. You could witness historical events up close. You could just chill in your favorite decade...

Wouldn't it be nice to have all this back?

Unfortunately, we are merely fathoming the possibility of moving forward in time right now. I'm not entirely sure how useful that would be...

I guess someone with an incurable disease could fast-forward to a time where a cure has been discovered. (Goodbye, Polio.)

What would you do if you could travel into the future?

That Girl Is Poison!

I had a really random thought - as I often do - while I was getting dressed for a "date" yesterday. I put on a black-and-white stripped shirt and black jeans replacing the gray shirt I had on before because I thought it was too dark, but this is not a fashion blog so I'll move on...

In an Animal Behavior course, I learned that a contrast of light and dark colors is commonly seen in poisonous (or chemically-defensive) animals. It serves as a warning to all predators that this animal is not one you want to mess with.

You see that white stripe? You've got about 5 seconds.

This got me wondering...

Of course, I'm not really poisonous. But I have a punky, rock star attitude that could warrant the poison label. Girly girls like pink and purple, gothic people wear black, depressed people favor dark colors.

My rebel personality is better expressed using the combination: bold colors + black. I also love the contrast: edgy + feminine.

I have a big personality that doesn't fit into a square peg. Of course there are a number of other things I like that don't quite fit into these two rules, but this is certainly my starting point!
